Re: [microsound] advice on recording devices?

i also use the r-09.

pretty good value for the money. one thing that i like about it is the very quick start-up time...if you're like me and tend to do a lot of spontaneous recording, it starts to really count for something (i've been able to catch much more useful material with the edirol than with my old minidisc recorder for this reason). another thing to consider is whether or not the unit has a proprietary battery (e.g. the microtrack). in my case, i like to be able to pop in a fresh set of AAs and continue recording...the alternative is a lengthy recharge before you can carry on.

I use the Edirol R-09, usually with Sound Professionals binaural in-ear
microphones when walking around. It does OK, but to get the cleanest signal
an outboard mic pre-amp helps, as the pre-amp on the R-09 doesn't have the
quietest noise floor. You will find that most of the portables in that
price range don't have the quietest pre-amps built in.
