I am thinking of getting myself a handheld recorder for
field-recordings and such and was wondering if someone had some
advice.
I have a budget of about 300 to 400 euro. I have been looking into the
Zoom H2 and Zoom H4.
I use a ZOOM H2 religiously and love it. For the price, it simply can
not be beat. It has four mics and can record a 'mock' surround file so
to speak. I often set the mic choice to 4 rather than 2, and later
when dragging files to the computer, I find very interesting angles
from the different mic positions of the 4 mics.
The quality is rather good, although I believe it lacks some midrange
clarity... I haven't been arsed to ever study too in depth this
concern. I did upgrade to a 2gb SD card (comes with 512mb) and am able
to record up to 3 + hours onto the thing. Battery life is rather good.
Comes with a wind shield which is essential. Also has a screw-in mic
handle and stand.
You can also use this an as audio interface if need be - I have once
or twice but mainly use my Presonus Firebox. The menu and gui isn't
too cryptic. The device has phones/line out, external mic in, and line
level in connections, in addition to the 4 mics.
For 200usd new and cheaper ones on EBAY, again, the price / quality
ratio can not be beat.
PLUS - ********It fits into your pocket comfortably!********
I have always been curious about the H4. Though I have never used one.
Anyone care to comment on the H4?
