I have indeed found Pd to be a very accessible tool to use for the
purpose of teaching synthesis principles. Its advantage over text
based languages is, that "the diagram is the program": Whereas CSound
etc. kind of require external dataflow diagrams and unit generator
images to let newbies understand the algorithms used, in Pd the
graphical representation directly corresponds to the sound generated. 

What's more, in Pd changes to the dataflow can be easily made while
the synth is running, by just editing a patch. The basic handling of
Pd is very easy and basically consists of just some steps to learn:
creating empty objects and naming and connecting them. Of course the
allowed names have to be learned, but that's what you have a teacher
for. ;)

(Yes, Max/MSP or Reaktor can do much of this, too, but they are not
free or not available on as many operating systems.)
