FM wins award!

The international jury for New Media at the 28th Festival consisted of
Tiina Erkintalo, director of AV-arkki, the Finish Media Art
Distribution Centre, Bill Vorn, interactive robotics artist and
coordinator of the Digital Image and Sound Program at Montreal's
Concordia University and Peter Wintonick, writer, filmmaker and New
Media advocate based in the free state of St-Laurent Boulevard.

The Jury would first like to congratulate the festival organizers for
promoting and supporting such an all inclusive and populist window on a
new media world. The exponential growth and success of the New Media
Section has provided a rich and rewarding experience both for the
public and the creators.

Within the context of this great celebration which continually expands
the visual language the jury has had a difficult task judging such a
wide spectrum of new media forms. The selections ranged from internet
sites to CD-ROMs, from performance to installations to the newest
expressions of sonaural art under the general banner of New Media, The
Jury decided, in the Zeitgeist of the next nexus age, that The
Videotron award for the Best International New Media Work would be
shared among three works, which also share values of interaction,
public participation and social critique.

The Jury would like to honour the pioneering work of Austrian Internet
artists, FARMERS MANUAL, (URL is web.fm) who have succeeded in making
the cybernetwork into a Net Work of awe and beauty. Self-reflective and
transparent, they mixmaster soundcollage, streamed video and
interNetional automation. Connnecting in realive time to the
wiredworld, this collective has expanded the true democratic impulse of
the internet, allowing public intervention and contribution at all
levels, from software to content. Although working on the outer bounds
of New Media, they evoke the mesmerizing energy and wonder rarely seen
since the earliest days of the invention of cinema.
