Re: [microsound] laptop ethics...

, i don't feel so bad, going to one of
"these" shows.. if i sit for a bit and listen, then get up walk around.. grab a drink, etc... i don't feel oblligated to watch the performers because, as we've all been discussing, there isn't much to watch.

YES. i've changed tactics within the last few years, but my concerts, and musical compositions, were very long, up to three or four hours. incredibly, sometimes people would sit in rapt attention for all that time & come up to me afterwards to thank me and tell me "we didn't get out of our seats". however i hardly expected this behavior. one summer i did a series of these concerts w/ ursula 1000 and shad scott. using pre-recorded electronic and electroacoustic passages on dat and cdr (played back randomly or at given cues) with live processing mixed with ursula DJing and shad playing keyboards, i conducted by mixing. i would record to dat, re-mix, and playback these new passages mixed w/ the previous prepared musics & start all over again, a kind of holographic performance, starting in the studio, that if played end to end, would have gone on for a day & a half or so. as it was, each layer was about three hours long.
our setting, and expectations, were such that the audience was comfortable to sit down, listen, become bored, walk to the cooler for a beer, sit down & listen some more.
which brings me back to the question of labeling the form. installation w/ performance elements, or performance w/ elements of installation?
