i had one of the first generation G3 powerbooks.. this was a couple
of years ago.. my headphone output broke, too.. and yes, the entire
motherboard has to be replaced.. as the audio is part of that
motherboard...

my powerbook was no longer under warranty at the time, so it would
cost me $1000 to fix.. i just bought a new laptop at that point (for
other reasons as well).. the newer "bronze" G3.. and made sure i got
the extended 3year warranty... but yes, it is true that the
motherboard needs to be replaced...
