I've done something like this, much lower tech--in fact, too low-tech 
to address your actual question.  But from my own experience, I will 
suggest to make sure that the space is secure.  I did an installation 
that played on four boom boxes, (wild-tracked quad!) and it proved to 
be an irresistible temptation for somebody.

I've got to say, though, that going CD ought to solve a number of the 
problems I encountered with cassette at the time...
