RE: [microsound] touch pads (off topic)

I've done this sort of thing before. I used some mats which are normally for
burglar alarm systems. They give out a contact closure when someone steps on
them. They are large plastic mats about 1m x 0.5m. I gaffed them to the
floor at a couple of rave parties and they survived the punishment.

To be safe, I'd recommend putting a square of carpet over the top of them.

I got them from Dick Smith here in Sydney - that was a few years back and I
don't think they sell them anymore.

I wrote some software which changed the images on a video screen whenever
the mats were stepped on. I found they were not very effective. The people
on the dance floor did not realise that they were influencing the video. I
may as well have been running a non-interactive presentation.

Well, slightly off topic.

I'm building an audio installation and need a lot of touch pads.
These are going to take a beating as they will be on the floor and
there will be kids jumping up and down on them. Does anyone out there
have any suggestions for relatively cheap options or even recipes for
making your own (they will need to be fairly robust, obviously)? I'm
US based (although English).

Thanks,

Richard
