This is bollocks in my opinion.

Sure this is how lots of people use their laptops live, but it just doesn't
have to be that way.

If you are using software such as Max/MSP, SuperCollider, Reaktor etc and
you plug in a midi keyboard, or some other triggering device plus a midi
slider/knob box, the laptop can be just as much an instrument as anything
else.
