i think you're quite right.
for some particular performances, i use to play my equipement extremely loud
(i know this is the microsound list...), partly because that's the only way
to get the sounds i use, and partly because i want people to get involved
physically (vibrating bones included).
because of the sheer volume and frequencies i play, i supply stuff for
people to protect their ears (it just filters so that the killing freqs are
much safer without altering the overall sound feeling).
people's reactions diverge: some are happy with this, thinking that's
respectful to the audience, while the more noise inclined ones assimilating
huge noise with punk attitude can't understand why i bother; this is quite
funny.
when i create music i only think about what i want to hear, and never about
what people would like or expect to hear (that makes you quite few but
pretty valuable friends ; ).
this is what i consider the "i don't care about people" statement worth for.
