Huh ? What gave you the impression that Romania's "chiefly populated with
the same illiterate peasants that their puppet dictators are plucked 
from" ?

For your information Romania produced some pretty influential figures in
the 20th century like Tristan Tzara, E.M. Cioran, Brancusi and Eugene 
Ionescu. Bartok, Ligeti and Xenakis were also born there. And now there's
Iancu Dumitrescu and Horatiu Radulescu. So it's not all just illiterate peasants. :-)
