Thanks for all the response to these questions!

SCMS seems to be an incredible nuisance: it'll prevent me from
conveniently re-recording my own work! -- I typically rework/remaster
things over time. I thought of a portable DAT machine, but I like the
durability/simplicity/ease/cost of MDs. I have some consumer-grade Sony MD
recorders whose recordings I'd like to be able to digitally transfer to my
computer via the (expensive) Marantz-MD-recorder, as well as having the
occasional portable capability of using XLR-grade mics and better
recording quality. 

Would such a very-good MD recording (ATARC v.4) be of sufficient quality
to master a CD?
