Re: any good releases lately?
I'll add my $0.02 here...
I've really been enjoying Nerve Net Noise "Various Amusements" (Hronir,
Germany). If all you've heard is thier unlistenable Meme CD, you haven't
really heard these guys. Homemade synthesizer pieces that are at once gritty
and nasty and pristinely recorded, with a strange use of space around the
sounds. Can't say I understand for certain what these guys are onto, but
there isn't anyone else doing it. If you like Kazunao Nagata (and who
doesn't?), I reccomend this one most highly. (by the way, the name is
misleading; NNN are NOT a noise band!)
Also, Eric La Casa "L'Empreinte de L'Ivresse" (Digital Narcis, Japan) is
stunningly beautiful. Not quite a new release, but it's new to me. Very
subtle and emotive recordings of water, leaves and wind. Blows me away every
time.
Justin Bennett "Magnetic City" (Spore, Netherlands) is another great one.
It's a stereo representation of what was a multi-speaker installation in
Barcelona, mostly recordings of urban streets. I've been keeping this on
"repeat" all night. Only a handful of people can compose exclusively with
field recordings and transcend the source material... La Casa and Bennett
are two of the very best. The music is strong enough to allow me to forget
the associations I might make with "street sounds" or "nature sounds", a
tough trick to pull off.
Alial Straa "Tunnels/Stairwell" (Alluvial, US)... I'm real interested in the
Orogenetic crew lately (John Grzinich, Seth Nehil, MNortham, Olivia Block),
I'm loving everything I pick up by any of those folks. By the way, is
Block's new CD out yet? Has anyone heard it?
....and everyone knows that the new Fennesz CD is gorgeous, so I don't need
to mention it again. Mego sure is a class act, no foolin'.
