SFMoMA + Japanese Music
I found out about this this morning (thanks to lawrence), and thought I
would pass it on to the list since I don't remember hearing about it before.

It's a project with SF MoMA (and I guess a few other musems) devoted to
"sound as artistic medium". Of particular interest to me was the work on
Japanese sound art, as compiled and discussed by Atau Tanaka. It's 10 hours
of streaming music with a fairly good discussion of the background of the
genre. Incl artists range from post-war NHK composers to today's laptop
crew like Ikeda and *0. It's definitely worth checking out.
Relatedly, I'm looking for help on getting representative works of a lot of
the people mentioned in the exhibit, particularly people like Keiji Hainio,
Yoshihide Otomo, and Toshimaru Nakamura, whose names tend to pop up from
time to time. It seems like a lot of these people's works are somewhat
difficult to find here stateside, so before I start trying to buy things at
random, I thought I would try to get some suggestions from people who know
more about this than I do. I tried my hardest to track down some things by
Otomo, and in three albums, I found three totally different sounds
(delicate glitches and tones on Cathode, concrete noises on his
collaboration with Christian Marclay, and kind of cheesy jazz-pop on his
Plays the Music of Takeo Yamashita album [I don't think I really "got" that
one]). So, assuming I'm closer in mindset to the Cathode style, I'd love
some guidance o him, or any related people.
thanks and happy listening,
mike
