  I served an internship with a company that sent someone to Alaska; a place
called 'dead man's bay'to record the water because( they claimed ) it had a
particular sound unobtainable in lower latitudinal regions. I believe they
used a microphone designed for ambisonic surround sound by AMS.
  
  I imagine the sounds of ice melting are probably warmer ones than a
microphone being frozen , though one could always play it backwards. .
