I really think that it depends on the particular circumstances of the
performance and the context. In particular environments it is truly an
arduous experience to watch someone twitching away in front of a computer
keyboard. there is a great deal to be said for 'stage presence'. it is one
of the major reasons that many people enjoy going out to listen to music in
venues as opposed to putting a cd on at home. the only other difference is
the spl levels and accompanying visceral effects attained via pa systems
which most people do not have in their lounge. I would have to say that the
most enjoyable concerts i have seen usually involve a live band of some sort
and not a computer musician. this is not to say that i didn't actually like
the computer musicians music more, as much of the time i have. it is just
that their activities/presence added very little to the overall
atmosphere/energy/ambience of the event.
In a different context however 'sound only' events that focus purely on the
sonic space and nothing else can be superb such as a lopez performance i
attended. His performance would have had little of the impact however if it
was in a club and not a pitch black space...
hmmm..its all rather complicated really.....
