Kyle,
I completely agree with your sentiments.  Granular synthesis as well as 
spectral manipulations can produce interesting results but, as you said, 
when they are the sole basis of a composition it gets old fast.  Sometimes I 
feel some compostions are rather example files for a certain synthesis or 
sample manipulation type as opposed to an actual composition.
