After thinking about this for some time, it made me think of what "glitch"
connotes and how this relates with herbert and matmos. This genre of music
IS a (relatively) new form of art for a number of reasons. Glitch is
redefined as a by-product of used material, but a material of a particular
sort--the accoustic detritus of technology. Granted, errors have been
a part of the human condition of eons. However, errors arising from
objects with a circuit embedded within came about the middle
of the last century, and glitch as a musical genre could not have come
about until these circuits became CHEAP enough to be recyclable. In light
of matmos and herbert (and atom heart and people on this list, etc),
"glitch" is a manifestation of technological excess. People are creating
treasures out of the electrical trash that we live in today. Tape cutups,
radio static, VLF,recording of machines, computer algorithms gone to
extremes, re-process of samples, etc. all make up "glitch music".
