How much avant-garde music is reflecting wisdom, and how much is
reflecting knowledge for the sake of knowledge? I can intuit the
difference when I hear it, and I can tell you, I'm desperately bored
by the latter.
Hello James. By all means be bored if you feel you must! ; ) But of
course "wisdom" and "knowledge" are subjective notions and can be
considered the same thing at times. Perhaps what you really mean is that
what you recognize as wisdom, is absent from much avant garde music. But
that doesn't mean that none is there at all.
Lately I've come to believe that if my music is not creating a
healing space, then I'm wasting my time and I might as well drive a
bus. Further, if I hear music by others that is not healing, then I
feel like my time is being wasted.
Does all music need to be used for healing? Personally, I think not. From
a spiritual/philosophical perspective, I believe that if one is truly
listening and in "the moment", so to speak, that there shouldn't be any
need to feel like a listening experience is a waste of time. And what
about this state of "mindfulness"? Especially from a Buddhist/Zen
standpoint, shouldn't one be "mindful" in as many situations as one can.
Because, if so, perhaps one would be able to glean much more from such
experiences as the ones you mentioned.
Peace, Dale
