just got a sony mz-r50 for $100 shipped thru ebay... i am very happy with
it... the only downside i seem to see reported is the inability to adjust
manual record levels while recording...

for mics i am using a set of sony lavaliers that i have had around for quite
awhile (sorry don't know the model #- they are quite small, take a76 photo
batts)

i hear good stuff about the durability of these rz-50s... went that way
after reading too many reports of sharps having read/write error probs...

my $0.02 worth...
