a couple more things about Live:

you can NOT use VST Instruments - they won't work in the program. VST plug-ins do work, although there are several notable exceptions (check your documentation or their website http://www.ableton.com/)

a really nice feature in v1.5 is the "Render to Disk". You can set a range in your Arranger window and save the entire piece (effect and mix changes included) and save it as a .wav or .aif file. Very handy if you have a complete arrangement set up.

or, you can use the software in a more improvised manner in the Session window.

Live has been incredibly stable for me. Very rarely crashes.
