Re: [microsound] [OT][tech talk]linux.audio

Hi all,

I'm new on this list (been lurking for a few months now), but this
particular subject has my interest, so I felt it was time to pitch in the
discussion for once:

Lots of you are advising this prospective new Linux user to run all sorts
of Windows software under WINE. My advise would be to stay as far away
from WINE as possible, especially if you're new to Linux. It's very
difficult to set up correctly, and even if it's set up correctly, it quite
often doesn't work, resulting in hours and hours of frustration.

As for software, a lot has been said already that I'll heartily <me too!>,
except for one: for hard disk recording, I haven't found anything that
works yet (well, not very well, anyways). Ardour isn't an option. At this
moment, you can't even download it yet (except from CVS - which isn't for
the faint hearted).

My own audio workstation, btw, is a Vaio laptop running Slackware 8.1, the
Blackbox window manager (which is nice and light - don't want to waste CPU
power on a window manager, right?), Audacity and PD. Plus, just for kicks,
some easier-to-use toys: gAlan, which may turn into Buzz for Linux someday
and SSM, which is reminiscient of early VAZ modular for Win 3.11.
