Re: [microsound] ambient books
--> Yes, good choice there with Robbe-Grillet. His films (_Last Year at
Marienbad_ and _Hiroshiman Mon Amour_) work in similarly ambient terrain.
<---
Robbe-Grillet was not involved with Hiroshima, Mon Amour- the screenplay was
by Duras. However, both Hiroshima and Marienbad were directed by Alain
Resnais. Robbe-Grillet directed several films, but I would not describe the
ones I've seen as "ambient" (instead, maybe "prurient"). Because of their
extensive use of descriptive language and experimentation with narrative,
many of the so-called French New Novels could be labelled "ambient" in the
sense we are discussing- Claude Simon speaks most to me, but I have also
been very impressed with several of Robbe-Grillet's novels (Jealousy and the
Voyeur in particular), Claude Ollier's La Mise en Scene, and early Duras
(although she isn't always considered a "new novelist" by lit critics).
best,
ian
