mp3 label practicalities

all this talk of mp3 labels and so on has prompted me to wonder whether all 
of you who administer such things are required to pay for hosting and so 
forth, or are there ways around that?  is a domain name really important 
for the continued success/visibility of your label?  do you all have 
friends who run webservers or something?
