Re: [microsound] hidden from the audience

solutions for the hidden performer in noisy locations...
i've been collaborating for a while with a live illustrator. It's always
improvised performances....I fiddle about on my laptop while she draws, the
drawing process being projected. The nice thing is that while we are usually
both tucked away at the back of the performance space the audience often
views the visuals as performative (responding to the music and vice versa).
I find that when you use video or VJing people often perceive the music as a
'soundtrack' and aren't as directly aware of it, and if the video is a sort
of abstract thing it can sometimes (depending on the audience) be reduced to
a noisy bar with music videos playing on big screens a la MTV. We usually do
our drawing/sound performances in Cafes (not usually the quietest of
places!) but the addition of a narrative flow and a back/forwards dialogue
between the sound and image is used to focus on the fact that it is a
'performance'. If you're interested we're doing a little one next thursday
in berlin, it would be great to have some feedback on whether or not the
concept actually works!
