  i Did notice them... that's what didn't impress me. I've listened to
complaints of someone getting a promo- copy of their favorite band's new
album and then finding the commercial release to not sound as good.

  I agree with your advice basically , and I'd probably send something to a
mastering engineer quite happily. I'm mainly cheering for the d.u.y.
control-everything-yourself-and don't-trust-no-audio-daddy-in-the-sky- sort
of approach. I realize I have ths 'stereotype' (huh huh , get it?) of a
mastering engineer , and if I explode the stereotype , who's going to master
the records? who's going to listen? -trying to get away from the idea that
there are certain people in the world who have a 'handle on sound ' ,
because it might be a better atmosphere for living.
