A good mastering engineer is usually very helpful. And what they bring to the
table is experience. Especially how to keep as much musical/audio information
intact as possible out to the listener through a typical playback system.
But there are others that just will slam your audio through a multiband
compressor, normalize the levels and calls that mastering.
Personally I avoid multiband compressors on microsound/electroacoustic material
as they are setup to handle the typical pop song/dance track well and just muck
up electronically generated stuff with abnormal (:=)) frequency distribution,
