re: Subotnick re: "Academic" computer music?

I was lucky enough a few years ago to interview
Subotnick for my (at the time) syndicated radio/net
show and therafter have always gotten a kick out of the
use of the phrase "academic" in relation to him.
During the interview he was talking about the joys of a
music program that he was working with that would teach
his grandchildren and other children everywhere about
music and how mentally and physically beneficial it is
for their creativity to make it. It was fascinating to
listen to him talk about the program and his
grandchildren and music and he immediately put me at
ease. Before the interview I had seen him as an
academic and was quite stressed about about
interviewing him (despite having interviewed many well
known artists over the years) because he was such a
seminal and pioneering figure in the electronic music
field, but talking with him showed how universal what
he is doing has become. Andrew Duke
