Phonograph was originally the name given to wax cylinder recorders so it 
doesn't specifically refer to a turntable.  It's a generic (possibly 
archaic) term for a sound recording device.  And since "graphy" implies 
recording I think it is more accurately attached to sound recording 
activities rather than a purely playback-based artform.

That's great, if micography were actually a word : )  And what about 
microphone-free field recordings through acoustic horns onto wax cylinders?
