I ended up buying a Minidisc deck to go with my portable recorder, as
well as putting some money into a USB audio unit that could take S/PDIF
in. I got them all separately (and a few years ago), so I'm not sure
how much such a system would run you. I like having a deck because it
has more options and an easier interface than the portable, and (prior
to life with iPod) it made transferring cd's to MD easier.
If you end up with a good enough cable, analog out into the analog in
might not be too bad considering the nature of the recorded sounds
anyways, giving you a piecemeal solution to put together over a few
months.
