Nothing that removes that amount of information is inaudible no matter the
salesmen would like it to be true. On the other hand the degradation is very
agacceptable in many applications.

Alternatives would include using a powerbook (recording to HD), something
like the Creative Nomad 3 or even a digital video camera set to 48khz PCM
mode for sound.
