i agree 100% with your points, but when you say "there actually was a time
when Black people actually 'cared' what whites thought of them" it sort-of
implies that there is currently a clearly defined oppositional system of
thought in place. not sure if this is true...it's possible to read thug
hip-hop as only a mirror of non-hip-hop America, which at its worst is
similarly materialistic, violent, narcissistic, etc.

if you "don't care" because you don't have to care, that's fine. but if you
"don't care" because you (+ only you) decided that's how it's gonna
be...even better.

nowadays, there may be less need to keep quiet. but then, why are there
fewer people standing up and speaking the truth? i miss Malcolm + Martin +
Huey + Fred Hampton + ...
