i know of quite a few people who use the pod 6.
there are a few other (like spl, et al) high-end guitar (tube) preamps that have amp modulation and dac to my knowledge, but i don't know of details.
softwarewise there is the "warp" plugin by steinberg, a software amp simulation suite. i read a few (quite positive) tests about it, when it came out, but never used it myself...

  line 6 is the best hardware one. some bands completely
  forego speaker cabinets now and just connect line 6
  amps into the PA system. i don't know if they make a
  software version or if there are any good software
  modelers at all.
