Julien Ottavi: As a breath
[in the "White noise series". Composed in October 2003]
"As a breath" is part of my main work with the computer, which consists
of building different series to go deeper into some aspects of the
possibilities of computer music programming.
With the computer you could create more than an orchestra, more than an
instrument, and most of the time people try to reproduce reality bigger
than it exists. Through the Series project, I try to find some
possibilities in programming musical software by linking with a sound
concept and a musical composition, producing an evolutionnary framework.
That's what I called "programmed composition". For the moment I have
developped 7 series: White noise series, étudesauxhertz,
meta-percussions series, voice and computer series, nervure magnétique,
the grid series and the series « Is there a composer in the room ». Each
peace is a realisation of an approach of a programmed configuration
defining the series. For each series, I choose a particularity of
musical programming as "white noise" synthesis and build a programm that
just allows me to use this kind of sound and no others as a sound source
material. I organise the programm to be limited to some processes around
this particularity and then I try to find ways to play within this
contraint.
In the "White noise series" I use only white noise synthesis processing
with different modules which transform and filter the original sound.
The sound source is very limited but the possibilities of creation you
could find in white noise is really like infinite...
For the piece "As a breath" I focused on the idea that our breath is
like a white noise filtered by our body from lung to mouth. So I tried
to find a sound level which will be near the one of breath and tried to
never go forward this level. In this way, there are a few dynamics in it
from someone who sleeps to someone who runs.
Sometimes, in the listening we could have this feeling of a cold desert
where there are a lot of events happening...

The Anti-Naturals: one hour as... six more arguments in our favor
The Anti-Naturals are a Romantic Modernist organization of artists,
musicians, writers, and theorists. Our collaboration is based on a
shared sense of aesthetic possibilities; we are motivated to seek new
forms of truth, beauty and pleasure. We are aware of the magnitude of
the forces mobilized by the System of Commodities. It is not enough to
decry the existence of the Spectacle. We intend to use both art and
theory as a battering ram against Capitalism and its false opposition,
Tribalism, in all of its mystical forms. We believe it is possible to
move beyond the inexcusable savagery of everyday life.
These six compositions, each about ten minutes in length, are like six
arguments in favor of total aestheticization. Six arguments in which we
combine the Good, the True, and the Beautiful, along with the Negative,
into work that is innovative in terms of both function and beauty.
All material was recorded in 2003 and mastered at Überkatze Studio in
Brooklyn, New York. For more information about the Anti-Naturals, visit
www.anti-naturals.org or write to theorists[at[anti-naturals.org.

Frans de Waard: one hour as party people
For music produced under my own name, I always use field recordings and
in many cases I do not add anything to the field recordings. By using
field recordings, one thinks the composer only uses those sounds he
likes - to a certain extent I do too. Recordings sounds I like, but
there are various works with sounds that really annoy me. Maybe it's so
that I can enjoy the sounds by recording them, or maybe I can kill them
by recording it. Maybe I'm a masochist. In OneHours As Party People I
recorded the downstairs neighbour celebrating her birthday. I had set
out to watch television that night, the balcony doors open and in the
small backyard below these people talked on end. At every point there
are at least different conversations going on. After being annoyed for a
few hours I started the recording. Almost seventy minutes later they
went inside. One Hour As Party People is the exact last hour of the
party outside. The party continued inside, giving me a night of hardly
any sleep. - Frans de Waard, 23-VII-2003
