indeed (absolute silence). definition is key to what we are talking about. in my eyes silence itself is entirely relative to the context and environment (ambient and tonal). for Cage silence was determined, in the end, by the intention of the composer, and the intention of the listener. i believe.

didn't Cage actually prove that there was NO SUCH THING as silence? that we
are always hearing through the gauze of biological noise? Cage used
'silence' as a way of turning our attention to sounds we normally filter
out...no?
