[microsound] re: on working methods for live performance

well, this digest form makes the list hard to respond
too...

to maru: i liked your post, i don't completely
disagree with you but i'd like to add a spin on it.
maybe instead of work i could say, a performer or
composer should "get their hands dirty" in that they
should not hide themselves behind trends, technology,
etc., even if those things are tools to get across
their point. we're still going to have to get our
hands dirty to make that robot filled anarchist utopia
a reality.

when i listen to music (on record or live) i want to
feel as little space between the motives of the artist
and the outcome of their project as possible. if
crazy theatrics and performance art is the shortest
distance between motive and outcome than so be it. if
a laptop is, so be it, and if a guitar and a
microphone are than that's just as good. the less
space between motivation and outcome, and the less
clutter from trends, pre-approved and accepted kinds
of sounds (every genre has its selection of sounds and
techniques to draw from that are garaunteed success in
an instant gratification sort of way), etc., the more
unique and fresh the work will be. That is because of
what Sesame (sp?) Street taught us: everyone is
different and special in their own way.

i forget who said it, but go drink a beer (i'll skip
the mushrooms and acid though) and have a good time
getting your hands dirty....don't forget about the
outisde world, react to it or add to it directly and
without bullshit.
