[microsound] re: on working methods for live performance
From: Ian Andrews <i.andrews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
I agree. Part of the pleasure is knowing that a unique musical event is
happening (being created by artist, machine or other process) in real time ,
in the here and now. But its not a question of feeling that one is being
deceived by the performer, its more of a question of ambiguity, of not
knowing what the performer is doing (is it generation, processing, djing,
etc?).
good point, ian....
phew.. certainly a lot to work through on this thread... and, the
bottom line is that there is no bottom line.. everyone
expects/enjoys/wants something different out of a live show... there
is no one "right" or 'better" way to do experience it, or perform it.
for those of you who ever have, or ever will, see me perform live..
i'll tell you now what i do.. this way, you can avoid the show if you
want, or come with a little background...
in a nutshell, my live performances are live improvised remixes using
fragments from my various recent releases.. lately i've been working
with my Kyma system live, building up some structures and tweaking
them from show to show to try to get what i want... these Kyma sounds
include sound files from my albums.. not whole tracks, but the parts
that make up those tracks, and sometimes earlier/discarded versions
of those sounds... i'll then mix, chop, filter, granulate, etc... all
of these different fragments into a new composition as the show goes
along.. so you'll hear bits and pieces, a sound, a loop, a voice,
from one of my albums, but never hear a whole track as it is on the
album.. sometimes you'll hear sounds from 2 or 3 different album
tracks mixed together.
i try to keep a healthy amount of live control in my Kyma patches, or
else i'll get bored up there just playing stuff back... as i said in
my earlier post, the drawbacks of mixing, matching, adn effecting on
the fly is that i make a lot of bad choices and mistakes.. but this
is a consequence i stand behind and will live with, becuase i'd
rather do it live with improvistation and risk, than do it perfectly
canned.
this weekend when i play at the Intransitive Festival, i think i may
even break out my melodica and toy accordion and a microphone and do
some real time live input processing.. ...
so, there you have it.. my shows are a mixture of disc files, live
improv, and chance.. usually i create the outline for the show a few
days before it's going to be played... and i do new ones every
time... if this sounds like something you'd like to hear... i look
forward to seeing you @ my shows.. if not, no biggie.. we can't force
people to like what we do!.. :)

PS: come to the show with blinders on.. no flashy visuals for me.
keep your peepers closed.
