RE: [microsound] re: on working methods for live performance

One step further and we have to ask ourselves why we
create/compose/perform/produce...
Is it for the music, or for the effect on others; for ourselves or for
others? Both? Neither?
When these questions are answered, I think, the other answers will fall into
place.

Microsound, and related genres of computerized musics have the particular
quality of having the creative process so utterly melded with production
that there is often little difference between the two (in my experience).
This is part of what makes performance difficult, and perhaps less engaging
than other types of music with more acoustic/electric instruments. ?

of ccourse, much of our presence in this noumenal world is defined by our relations with the Other. When we find a way to exchange embodied energies between the Self and the Other, we tap into a fundamental situation of inspiring flow. whatever the 'material' means we choose to configure this energy in is idiosyncratic, it doesn't matter so much, so long as it opens a space for the exchange process to happen. when that happens, well, think of those moments where you have sat across from an Other. One with which you did not share a family background, a social demographic, a language, a cultural background, and yet, despite these impediments, one had the sense that there was a flow, a deep sharing, an understanding that transcended the limited socially-coded surface engaement. after such an engagement (a groove!), both of you can walk away, literally, INSPIRED. A fundamental phenomena. where the energy of the two people are multiplied beyond each individuals energy available.

each medium (or form of mediation of energy between the self and other has a certain set of constraints that one has to get through or over, in order to get the energy across... some work for some people, some work for others, and an important thing to remember is that each form of mediation is highly reflective (embedded) in a socially determined situation, so, are always socially-dependent in the way, the efficiency that they allow a flow. of course, the picky material details can be argued over and discussed for ever, but the base issue is, does it work? does the means get the groove across? I've heard it happen in so many different ways that I can't begin to enumerate but a small fragment of them. and indeed, the list is, in a way about as finite as there are living (and formerly living) humans. (from Coltrane to Cascone ;-) and of course, not by any means limited to any 'form' at all (we're too stuck in mechanistic materialism these days), think Quantum...

Don't forget that the energy flow has to be two-way, a dialogue, otherwise you miss out completely. Sending a signal out isn't enough, one must be open for both the feedback and the unexpected presence of the mysterious other...

a little rant for Tuesday morning on a small island in the Baltic Sea.
