It uses Gentoo's ports-based system (Portage), instead of Debian's
tools (apt and dpkg).

It's also worth noting that the applications that Niklas says "never
quite ran on OS" are
actually running on os x when used with these systems. Gentoo for Mac
OS and Fink
merely provide convenient pre-packaged solutions to ease the pain of
installing an
application and its dependencies.
