to what i've heard from various sources in hiphop/r'n'b/etc. production it
has become usus lately to first program/sketch out tracks with ripped
samples/loops/whatnots and then have session musicians come in and play them
or variations of these...
don't know about the exact legal status though...
whether they still have to pay royalties for songwriting and just avoid
paying for the rights to use the recording and/or (esp. in the case of only
3-4 note riffs) if this way any copyright issues can be avoided.

anybody any more info?
