Never slam levels or normalize anywhere near 0dBFS. I track with peaks at -16dbFS, this give EQ etc. enough headroom. To avoid distorting the DA-sections of most CD/DVD-players keep peaks in the final master below -6dbFS or use a meter that can show you the interpolation peaks of multisampling DA:s. Or simply use a competent mastering engineer.
