I in a different way but with similar aims. I tend to record loops and
paterns from my synths on cd quality and arange those on the laptop, then I
use a set of paralel outputs, mix on the desk with the analogue effects and
record to tape. That tape recording gets pulled back into the laptop at a
high quality sample rate.

The advantage of this is that I can keep my multi tracks cd quality as high
quality multitracks eat diskspace for breakfast and since the end result is
the sum of all the cd quality tracks it doesn´t realy suffer from the
disadvantages of cd quality itself. I also get the nice tape compression and
my end result is a high quality (bits wise, at least), fairly large file
(but only one) that the mastering engineer won´t frown at.

Depending on the situation I might make a "master" version that´s loud and
play that to friends but I prefer to give the mastering engineer something
quite close to how it came from tape.

It´s all a compromise between how nice analogue sounds, the ease of digital
and diskspace. All of those are factors to me and this way I feel I get the
most out of all of them with the least side effects and limitations.
