What cage did not take into consideration (and i love
that wonderful man) in his ridiculous diatribes
against recorded music was recording BEFORE recording.
Almost all the problems cage pointed too were in some
way contained within Notated music as well. Sadly,
without notated music, even cage himself wouldn't have
existed (and as much as he SAID he was fighting
against being a pressence in his music, the only way
to really do that would be to walk away from music).
Also, I think its important to take a deeper look at
Cage's comments on recorded music. There is a
wonderful article on the subject by Yasano Tone in the
last Leonardo journal I'll have to dig out. I remember
it made me hate Cage's comments much less...
