Re: [microsound] the great depression of experimental music?

"or to put out releases on
(what i consider) a disposable format such as CDRs"

"i mentioned being a record collector and
this is what worries me about CDRs and MP3s. i love having something tactile
that goes along with the music,,, i dont think you have to have it to have
great music,,, but i really love work that is coupled with beautiful
packaging,,, even if it is as simple as a printed sleeve,, im a fan of nice
packaging."

I'm not sure I understand what your issue with CD-rs is, unless you know something I don't. I am not sure, in terms of the product at least, that a CD-r is different than a CD. I know they are different in how they are made. A CD has a mold made for it, and then CDs are pressed from that mold, whereas a CD-r is just the same thing as a blank CD that is made to where you can record onto it. Perhaps the fact that a mold exists for a CD somewhere, and does not for a CD-r is what you mean by CD-rs as a 'disposable format'. I'm reaching in the dark here though, since I don't have a clue what you could possibly mean by the 'disposable format' remark. But mold or not, a CD and a CD-r are the same thing when they are in your hands. Both are a disc with musickal information on them that you can pop into your CD player and listen to. You can't record over CD-rs, so the disposability issue doesn't come up there (which makes me confused about you comparing them to cassettes also). But, all the CD-rs I've bought have packaging (and usually the most creative), and usually also have things silkscreened on the top. So what's the real difference? Maybe you are getting different CD-rs than I am. But I know many CD-rs that are highly collectible and sought after. I can agree with all you said about .mp3s. Useful to some extent, but a limited extent. But I'm not getting the CD-r part. CD-rs, CDs, I don't see the difference in terms of the listener end. The only difference is that CD-rs allow people without money to get pressed CDs done the ability to make a good product, which can only be a good thing as far as I can tell (I have in mind a 'power to the people' kind of thing here). Anyway, enlighten me to what it is that is really bothering you about CD-rs.
