I know that much of Trevor Wishart's work since the 80's has made use of linear predictive coding, a technique that uses resonators as you described. Check out the Voiceprints cd... possibly Tongues of Fire as well.

data sonification (in the sense of converting arbitrary data files (image, text, video) into sound by means of file format hacking; i.e., data-bending)
Actually, if you find any particularly interesting works based on data sonification, I would love to hear about them.
