Re: [microsound] wave field synthesis

The lack of sweet spot is interesting, but it seems as if you would be limited to only producing sounds whose source is in the front 90 degrees (or so) of your audience (unless you used a 360 degree ring of speakers, but a straight line of 24 seems hard enough to manage...). Still, it seems much better than ambisonic for producing sounds in relatively cramped spaces.

I saw her discuss this @ STEIM in sept. very cool (if you have a bunch of decent loudspeakers)

Marije Baalmaan gave a demo of her Wave Field Synthesis work at the Linux Audio Conference last spring. I thought it might be interesting to pass on to the list for folks interested in ambisonics and audio spatialization. The system uses an array of speakers to precisely position a sound in the room, *regardless* of the position of the listener. This makes it far more advanced than most other spatialization systems, which rely on the listener staying in the so-called "sweet spot" in order to to hear the proper effects.
