cage was also inspired
by rauschenberg's white paintings
displayed at black mountain college,
noticing how the dust created shadow
and texture on a neutral ground.

i have never felt that cage
has ever been a 'conceptual artist'.
his work was ultimately practical,
and his methods inspired by
immediacy and circumstance.

i think people misunderstand cage
because of the influence he had,
and come to his music with too
much of this conceptual baggage.
