I was not my intention to talk disparaging....oval ofcourse is not "lucky" - theres nothing random about his music...what I meant was that he is more sucessfull in merging experimental composing techniques with catchy/melodic tunes. you could also argue that his music has a sense of meaningfullness or purpose even it still very abstract......
as for the "Average laptop geek? " ...sure you will agree that, like there are one too many records made with drummachines and a tb-303, there are too many records made with laptops?
its not so much a question about "good" or "bad" music, that question is ofcourse subjective, more about the lack of an in-depth understanding of the possibilities in a given piece of equipment, a lack of sense of music history, and a lack of general reflection that results in "empty/uninteresting" music....
In many ways I feel that the "laptop revolution" is somewhat disapointing - mostly in relation to timbre- listen to e.g. stockhausen or whoever that created music with primitive and lo-fi tools and created thick dense and deep timbres, opposing a lot of computer created music where the timbres or overall sound of a track often is thin "computersounding" in an uncool way, or simply containing the very iconic timbres created with certain plug-ins like bit reduction and so on.
- the point here is that like the example wih some synched up drummachines and synths, its very easy to create something that sounds ok/cool - same with computers, but very few explores beyond the interface presets resulting in assembly line musics....
beginning to sound like Popp himself here..better stop:)
but I mean what im saying.
