Re: [microsound] process [was :new autechre]
recordings have an irresistable
double edge to them dont they?
it doesn't bother me that i've
heard many of mine only once.
(hell, i have a hard time justifying
buying a Cage number piece on CD!)
i was always cautioned away from
them as a student for pedagogical
reasons, and it is a little sad how
they have trumped the live show.
the MTV DJ culture today breathes
the recorded artifact, and prefers
that entertainment become
increasingly automatic. even in the
fringes of electronic music, there
is a heavy faction of sample-based
and referential artists, seeding
their imagination with a recording.
reification through repetition is a
common thread. music being written
today has a tendency towards
commodification. i wonder if a piece
of music's longevity is really inverse
to its ability to fit within this trend.
