[microsound] new autechre

While I suppose that some of my colleagues would be
very happy to make a big deal about whether or not
the new Autechre disc uses some or any Max/MSP (it
doesn't), I actually think it's a bit reductive and insulting
to reduce Sean and Rob's work to the sum of their tools.

The idea that a listener would so quickly assume that a
given tool or piece of software must, somehow, produce
a given effect says more about the assumer than the
object of their attention. And, having lived with the disc
for a while, I'd also suggest that anyone who'd dismiss
the thing as a bunch of repetitive beats isn't listening
very carefully (Augmatic Disport is quite interesting
in terms of its irregularity, in particular).

That said, I find some of the listen more compelling
the other bits. From the standpoint of attempting to
imagine the release in the context of what came before
it and making a guess about authorial intent (which is
always a dicey business), I would assume that the
great challenge would be deciding what to emphasize
or work on after those spline-curve trajectories that
drove the filigree on Confield/draft - it seems
to me that one might imagine them deciding to not
pursue that aspect of things further, and documenting
a possible path back.

While I'm quite partial to Tri Rep, I would much
rather hear both minds in motion rather than some
predictable rehash of My Favorite Disc. I count on
Sean and Rob to NOT do what I expect next, and
they continue to not disappoint me. Your mileage
may vary, as always.
